Why 'ONLY' Hero dies in latest movies ?
Why 'ONLY' Hero dies in latest movies ?
Literature is too wide
branch. Because it accommodates many other branches in it. Now, in current
time, movies and television serials becomes a part of literature. So, the plot,
characters, diction and many other things which we study in any form of
literature, now we have to study of movies and serials also.
Here I would like to
share my one observation. It came in my mind after recently seen movie
“Highway”. In this movie, at the end the protagonist named ‘Mahabir’ dies and
the heroine ‘vira’ is remained alive. After the end of the movie suddenly this
thing came in my mind. If we observe many recent sad ending movies we find that
only hero dies and heroine alive. While earlier what was the thing that in sad
ending movie both hero and heroine die. There were some exceptional movies also
like “Guide”, “Devdas”, “Mera Naam Joker” or “Deewar” But now this is becoming like
tradition very minutely in our movies.
I am giving many examples of it from the recent movies. Some came in my mind and some my friends suggested me. As I told above the movie “Highway”, then “Lootera”, “Aashiqui 2”, “Jannat”, “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai”, “Shootout at Vadala”, “Gunday”, “Ranjana”, “Kal Ho Na Ho” , “Tezz”, “Jannat 2”, “Fanna” etc.

So, it is the matter of thinking that why such type of change is coming? And another thing is in most of such movies hero is presented as criminal or in gray shaded role. There are some exceptions also like in this movie “Ranjana” or “Kal ho na Ho” hero is not criminal. But yet he dies. So, is in movies this new type of feminism coming out? Or is hero marginalized in this way? And yet most of such movies are written or produced or directed by males. This thing may not draw our attention perhaps but it is now happening in so many movies. So it can be the case of study.
I am giving my
interpretation here. If we see from feministic perspective in most of the
movies heroine is shown fairer and morally better than the hero. So perhaps it
gives the sense that now it is not the old trend of ‘Herogiri’. And now people
will not accept “Sholay”, “Jugnu” “lophar” or “Jwell thief” kind of film were
hero is celebrated even with bad qualities. Though in such new films heros do
‘herogiri’ but at the end they die. Or in movies like “Ranjana”, “kal ho na ho”
or “Aashiqui 2” they don’t get acceptance for their “the great love” by
audience. So, they die. In this way they are marginalized also, because even
after they die heroin is shown in quite sane condition.
And if I interpret this
as against feminism, then I have two things to say. First is, Death is
considered as the matter of courageous persons. Death cannot be easily accepted
for anyone especially for females. Because mainly death is the matter of
Warriors. Weather they are good or bad. So, by such death of hero they feeds
people’s condition of mind that only males can show such courage. Here comes
that idea of tenderness of girls (Girls are given dolls and boys tools, as
toy). Most of such movies hero meets with quite ‘heroic’ death. Perhaps they
tell that this heroine cannot do so she should remain alive and should feel
loneliness.
The second thing is, in
most of such movies when hero dies heroine becomes reason, directly or
indirectly. In “Highway” hero’s mobile is fallen by heroine. From it they are
traced by heroine’s father and they kills hero. In “Gunday” clearly heroine
becomes cause of death of both heroes. In “Lootera” such situation is created
as if hero ‘scarifies’ his life for the heroine, while he first became cause of
her suffering, while there was no need
of such surrendering. Then in “Aashiqui 2” this situation is shown where hero
does everything for heroin and she cannot do anything for him. And he ‘has to’
die. In “Jannat” also such thing comes. In “shootout at Vadala” heroine herself
gets arrested hero to police. In old movie “Guide” also heroine becomes reason
of hero’s fall and death. Do these things nourish that idea that “women are
dangerous”?And such films are consumed widely by people. That means a large
group of people has not any problem with it or a large group of people doesn’t
observe it or a large group of people doesn’t care for it.
Whatever the things are
but when we find that the same thing is repeatedly being in any form of
literature then we should notice it. Because after all literature is the
“mirror of the society”. Our thoughts, our beliefs and our problems are
reflected there. And any outsider can get the idea of any society or nation by
its literature.

Your topic is very fresh and new, your observation is about why hero dies in latest movie, is also nice. In my opinion this is director's view point, now a days that type of movie is hit and not only in our Bollywood but in Hollywood also many movies are based on this theme. One best example is movie "Titanic" in this movie at the end hero dies only for heroine. And heroine survive, and movie is very hit today also.
ReplyDeleteI only say that you are good writer, I like your this ability...
Hi Riddhi, Very interesting topic and really good interpretation of your observation.
ReplyDeleteYour interpretation that, death is courageous act and for warriors... I like the most.
in our films, hero is always seen with 'heroic' figure. and his actions are very powerful. but not heroines. These all tragedies suggest that tragedy should happen when hero died as if heroine's death is not important for causing tragedy in film. You choose very important topic which shows monopoly of patriarchy in our mind also.
And you can give justice to your topic very well with minute study and keen observation.
